Smoke & Mirrors – Behind the Scenes at The Interview

on

Snapshot_010

This is the first in a series of posts that look behind the scenes at how The Interview is created for you to play. I will be revealing information that, for some, may shatter illusions. After all, these are illusions we worked on hard on creating so that you have immersive and seemless game experience. If you would prefer to not know the ‘stage secrets’ then read no further!

The manor elevator! Seems so simple at first glance. You get in, hit the button and you’re transported to the hallway to continue your game. Our objective is for you to feel like that there is one lift that you’re all sharing and taking the ride to the hallway of your choice in a smooth and effortless way.

So, I’m alluding to the fact that there isn’t just one elevator….so how many are there?….2, 5…more?

There are in fact 25 elevators in game and you could be entering any one of them each time you press the lift call button. With the exception of the reception elevator all of the hallways have more than one ‘instance’ and therefore more than one elevator is active at all times. 25 Elevators where all the back end teleports have to work accurately all day, every day…with a huge amount of stress on them from the number of players playing the game and all while making it seem there is just one…single….elevator.

How did we do this? Firstly kudos to our scripting team who spent hundreds of hours working on the elevator mechanics and programming the location for each teleport taken within each lift. Then we tested, and tested and tested some more. 25 lifts each with 5 buttons…125 teleports per tester. Not only did we need to test that the teleports that should work did but we also needed to test that the teleports that shouldn’t work (because levels hadn’t been unlocked) didn’t work.

The elevators are the key to so much of The Interview. For those that have played and read this post we hope you enjoyed this behind the scenes glimpse of the game. If you haven’t yet played The Interview read the How To Play and then visit the game start to purchase your game hud and let your adventure commence.
